ST. lucia   Scholarship

St. Lucia’s story is a sad one of Martyrdom, and a gory one. She was a victim of Christian persecution that occurred during the reign of Diocletian, a Roman emperor. In her death she lost her eyes, bringing more depth to the meaning of her name which is associated with light.

She lost her life on the 13th day of December in 304 A.D.1  In Scandinavian countries this day is known as St. Lucia Day, it marks the start of Winter Solstice and their Christmas season. Celebrations involve children dressed in white. In the center of the children is a young woman known as the Lucia Bride. They wear head wreaths made of evergreens, usually lingonberry branches. The bride’s crown is adorned with candles that represent the return of light and new life.2 . Many gather to see and hear the Lucia youth singing hymns. She was a light in a dark time for the individuals who followed the Christian faith.

The Junction City Scandinavian Festival honors St. Lucia and follows the Scandinavian traditions of celebrating her life of strong conviction. We may not dress in white, or sing hymns, but we found our own way of appreciating her memory. Each year we award a young individual with a scholarship to further their education after high school. The Junction City Scandinavian Festival cherishes the youth of our community and know they are the light of the future. One applicant is chosen and awarded one thousand dollars to assist toward their college tuition. The scholarship winner is announced to the public at Opening Ceremonies on Thursday morning of the Scandinavian Festival.
