ARTS & CULTURE
KUNST OG KULTUR
THROUGHOUT THE YEAR
AT THE SCF
During the year the SCF hosts many nonprofits and other unincorporated groups. Many of these groups support arts and culture. The Long Tom Knitters Spinners group is featured (right) and meet monthly at the SCF facility.
The Danish Brotherhood of America gathers at our facility and will demonstrate Danish language at some SCF events.
Community Crafters is an unincorporated group, which started in 1961 in conjunction with SCF’s largest event, the Junction City Scandinavian Festival. This group is independent but uses the facility to gather and create.
Junction City art ASSOCIATION
The Junction City Art Association was established in 1961 alongside the Junction City Scandinavian Festival. The JCAA has long since been an independent group but is still close to home. The SCF facilities host the JCAA for monthly meetings and they are present as a vendor showcasing their group’s beautiful talents at the Festival in August.
The JCAA has close ties to the SCF. In the picture (left) the gifted artist Elizabeth Zimmerman is painting a traditional Danish-style plate, which is presented by the JCAA each year. In the picture (left) the backdrop for our summer events was painted by the JCAA in 2013. This mural canvas shows a rural setting in Scandinavia. The JCAA is a valued partner that helps bring art and culture to our local area.
SCANDIAVIAN DAY CAMP
In 2023, the SCF brought back a local event, which is a Scandinavian Day Camp for 1st-6th graders. The day camp is five days long and features cultural crafts, dance, cooking, folklore theater, and Scandinavian-inspired games. The camp is five hours of cultural fun for kids. Scholarships are available and registration is limited due to building capacity.
ARTS & Culture classes
The SCF has small events throughout the year centered on culture. Sewing classes, Fika socials, dance classes, and cooking classes are all offered by the SCF. Smørrebrød a Danish open-faced sandwich is featured (left) from our most recent cooking class.
Yule Fest
Coming December 2024, the SCF is hosting a Yule Fest free to the community. The event will provide authentic food, crafts, and entertainment. The two-day event is centered around Nordic holiday traditions, arts and culture.
