The Junction City Scandinavian Festival is celebrated on the second Thursday-Sunday of August. As the founders planned the event, they used the Farmer’s Almanac as a guide. This time period was after most local harvests were completed and the least chance for rain. Since it is Oregon, this was a valid concern while scheduling an outdoor event. The settler’s of this small town were mostly of an agricultural trade and many set their days to the weather. We have kept with tradition. This year the dates of the 62nd annual Junction City Scandinavian Festival are August 10-13th, 2023.
At the Junction City Scandinavian Festival we dedicate each day of the four day event to a Scandinavian country. These days are rotated each year to provide equal opportunity for visitors to come on the day they prefer. The order of days does not change which vendors or performers are present. Some groups will change their performance set to reflect the specific day. Vendors might change their booth decor, costumes, or feature specific items from that day’s country.
In the distant past, the event celebrated Iceland and co-shared a day with Norway, but as time went on the Festival assigned a specific day to the four Scandinavian Countries that best represent our town’s history. You will still see Icelandic flags, some music, costumes and other acknowledgements to Iceland at the event.
